Year in Review:  1964

The goals for this assignment were to produce a research paper summarizing significant events from the student’s specified year.  The mode of writing for this paper would be simply expository.  And as can be shown in the blog entry and the paper itself, I have accomplished the goals for this paper.  I described approximately five significant events in great detail and wrote the paper in according with MLA format.

The year in review was an interesting first college research paper.  From the beginning I did not know what year to actually focus on.  I was stuck between the years 1955, 1964, and 1979.  Plus, all of those years had numerous events to write about.  For 1955, I could write about the Korean War.  Then, for 1964 I could write about the British Invasion, specifically about the Beatles.  Finally, for 1979 I could write about the introduction of the Sony Walkman.  Those events were just the icing on the cake for their particular years, and there is so much more that happened during each year.  Though in the end, I chose the year of 1964 and that was just the beginning.

I found so many interesting things to write about and research like:  The Beatles coming to America; The Good Friday Earthquake; the opening of the first BLIMPIE; the movie My Fair Lady winning eight Oscars at the Academy Awards; the Berkeley Free Speech Movement; the release of the Ford Mustang; and the start of the Vietnam War.  The researching of all of these events took a big chunk out of my total time to write this paper so I had to limit the number of things I was going to write about.  The decision to pick which particular events to write about was actually very hard, but in the end I chose:  the Beatles; the Good Friday Earthquake; the opening of the first BLIMPIE; the movie My Fair Lady; and the release of the Ford Mustang.

Some of the paragraphs for each event were easier to write than others.  For instance, the paragraph about the movie was easy to write because all that really needed to be talked about was the summary of the movie, what it was based on, and the number of Oscars it won at the Academy Awards.  But, other paragraphs, like the one on the Beatles, were hard because I did not know what exactly to write about.  I initially thought that my chosen audience, my parents and grandparents, was easy to write for, but because they lived through it, it was harder to pick what to write.  In the end, I believe I wrote about the events, to a good extent for my particular audience.  I wrote my paper over a course of a couple days and I must have gone back editing some things more than others.  My finished paper came out alright, but it would have been nice to write about all of the events I came up with, though my schedule and extra-curricular activities did not permit so.
